Since, WhatsApp is available for Android, iPhone, Windows, BlackBerry, Symbian most of us are active users of WhatsApp. Some of them claim that they can't live without WhatsApp a single day. You might be interested in knowing how this company started and how it reached this stage.
According to WhatsApp's official site, WhatsApp is an early stage startup which is technology oriented and the name WhatsApp is derived from the phrase "Whats Up??". WhatsApp believes a day will come when everyone will have a smartphone so they wanted to build a better SMS alternative.
WhatsApp was founded by Brian Acton and Jan Koum (He is the current CEO of WhatsApp). Both have spent a time span of 20 years together at Yahoo!. When they entered the market they were surrounded by competitions like WeChat, LINE. But gradually they started capturing the market. WhatsApp processes 27 billion messages daily which they announced officially on Twitter, this shows their deep penetration in the market. They have about 200 million active users.
You might be wondering how WhatsApp makes money? What is their business model?
Well here's the answer. There are 2 ways by which WhatsApp is making money. The first one is known to most of us i.e the subscription fee of $0.99 that WhatsApp charges for 1 year. For now not a single person has paid the subscription fee, everyone is using it free of cost. Now you might be thinking then how WhatsApp makes money. Its the second way which is known to very less number of people.
We use WhatsApp to send messages, pictures, videos to our friends and family. All this data gets stored in the WhatsApp servers. This data is extracted by the marketers and experts to know the likes, dislikes, preferences, opinions of the end users. This data is of great importance to big companies so that they serve their customers in a better way.
Another thing worth noting behind WhatsApp's success is the rumours about facebook and google trying to acquire WhatsApp.
